Business Start-up Taster Course

Starting Business CoursesFor those who are exploring the possibility of self employment, or who want to find out more before committing to either our intensive 2 day course or the accredited Level 2 8-week programme, we offer a half day business start-up taster course at a range of local venues.

The workshop lasts 3 hours and runs from 9.30-12.30.

At the end of the business start-up taster course you will have covered a range of issues including:

  • What do you want from self-employment
  • What would be unique about your own business
  • Do you have a market for what you want to sell?
  • How to get started
  • What support is there locally

This workshop provides an overview of what self-employment is all about, and covers the key things to consider when starting a small business. You will learn about first steps in business planning, marketing and finance. At the end of the session you will learn about other local business start-up training and support available.


Learners must be aged 19 at the start of the course.

These half-day workshops are free to all recipient of the benefits listed below, who are kindly requested to show some documentary evidence on the day:

  • Job Seekers Allowance
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Income Support
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pensions Guarantee Credit
  • Council Tax Benefit.
  • An unwaged dependent of someone claiming these benefits.

There is a new universal credit system coming in which should also apply – details to be confirmed

How will it be delivered

The half day workshop will combine discussion, group activities & personal reflection. A useful Q& A session is led by a local accountant who can answer questions relating to registering with HMRC and keeping finance records.

Your tutor will support you during the workshop and will guide you through the activities and exercises. They may be able to refer you to other specialist agencies to help you find answers to questions relating to your specific circumstances. Your tutor will give you feedback and will help you assess your progress at the end using a short individual evaluation form.

Prior Knowledge

No previous experience of business is necessary, though it can be useful to come along with a rough idea of the kind of business you are interested in starting.

What do I need to bring

A pen and notebook would be useful. Course handouts and a summary of powerpoint slides are provided as useful reference material.

Where does it lead

Your tutor will provide you with clear information about your future options and progression opportunities. If you would like further information and advice about starting your business your tutor will be able to refer you to local specialists and business advisers, as well as informing you of future training courses and support provided by other agencies.

Course Cost

The half day workshop is free to those claiming benefits and £12 to others.
