Business Motivation

1. What did you do before your current business?
Marketing – I’ve been a professional marketer for 26 years, working with large corporates in London. However, after 10 years I was burnt out from fast-paced London life, and I retrained as an Aromatherapist and Infant Massage Instructor.

So I had a few years where I was practicing as a therapist whilst coaching and running marketing workshops for therapists and small businesses. It was all a bit mad for a while, but it’s where I learned how to apply marketing to life as a small business. I’ve been working with small businesses ever since.

2. What made you start your current business?
I was coaching and teaching therapists and small businesses, whilst working as a Clinical Aromatherapist and Infant Massage Instructor, and discovered a love for the coaching and teaching side of marketing which I hadn’t anticipated.

Having my two children during that time meant that something finally had to give, so I gave up my part therapy/part marketing business and started coaching and teaching marketing full time (well, around the kids) – that was over 8 years ago now.

3. What do you most enjoy about your business?
Oh, SO much. I LOVE empowering business owners with knowledge that they can go on and use time and time again. I very firmly believe that marketing comes from the inside, and I love bringing all those strands together for people and see them light up.

And I love it that through the giving of proper marketing knowledge, my clients and workshop delegates can go on to build big businesses without wasting money and getting ripped off. I find it very humbling to be part of a client’s support team that gets them the business success that they want. I love and enjoy their successes just as much as them!

4. If you had a magic wand what would you change about your business?
I need another three of me! I’m building my Merrie Marketing team: I have the lovely Jen who looks after all my online marketing for me, and Lesley who looks after my admin, and two more will be joining the crew over the next three months. However, it’s hard to cram everything in when you have a strong and growing business when there are only so many hours in a day.

It’s important that I’m still a mum, and spend time with the kids (or being their taxi service and chief cook and bottle washer), and I make no excuses for the fact that I switch into “mum” mode after 3.30 when they get home from school. Like most professional mums and dads, juggling becomes an art form!

Sharing business tips

5. Do you have any useful tips or ideas that you could share?
Keep focused on your business plan. Know WHY you are trying to create what you’re trying to create (people will buy you, your ideas and beliefs, not the products or services you sell). Keep your marketing consistent – always. And if you don’t love what you do and who you do it for, then you need to have a re-think!

6. Finally what will you be focusing on and talking about in your Forest enterprise fair seminar?
I’ll be looking at how you find those elusive ideal clients for you (the ones that love you), and then how to keep them. There’s no point finding them, if you can’t keep them afterwards!

Did you know it costs eight times as much to find a new client as it does to keep one you’ve already got? So it pays to look after them, and it’s actually quite easy when you know how. I’ll be sharing that ‘how’.
